I am having a brain freeze, so bear with me for a moment. I have so many questions to ask New York Times bestselling author Gaelen Foley and find myself stumped where to start. I have been told that starting at the beginning is the best place, so readers wish me luck and here I go.
Gaelen, as always I am so psyched that you are here today, sharing with RCJR eZine readers about your latest in the Inferno Club series, MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. I would love for you to share with RCJR’s reader more about this book.
Christine, I am seriously thrilled and delighted to be here on my official release day for MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. Thanks for inviting me. Your blog is one of my favorite romance places on the web. I am happy to celebrate my cyber-launch party with you all!
What is the first thing that struck you in writing MY RUTHLESS PRINCE?
Well, let’s see. One of the first things was that I have not written as tortured a hero as Drake in a long time. I think he’s right up there with Darius Santiago from PRINCESS. It’s also got a very unusual heroine, Emily, as you mentioned below. Another challenge was a new-to-me and different setting, a castle in the Bavarian Alps .
I have been waiting (Waiting For A Girl Like You by legendary rock band Foreigner playing repeatedly in my head) for Drake, the Earl of Westwood and childhood best friend, Miss Emily Harper’s story from the very first Drake popped up in MY WICKED MARQUESS. I am over the moon that it is finally here. Did you ever think your readers would be this devoted to Drake when you began to create this character?
I know that I was, and that’s usually a good sign. I definitely did not expect Drake to start stealing every scene he appears in through the series, lol. I’ve always had a soft spot for the really tortured heroes, though, and he certainly fits the bill.
I love the relationship between Drake and Emily. For readers, yet to have read MY RUTHLESS PRINCE would tell us more about their unique relationship?
With these two, it’s like they have their own little world together that’s separate from the rest of the world at large. He is really the only man in the world to her, and for him, she is the embodiment of everything pure and good that he is fighting to protect. As his deadly missions for the Order lead him to into increasingly dark places, he relies on their relationship to keep him tethered to the light. Otherwise, he could be in danger, himself, of going into the darkness and never coming back. She’s the one who keeps him sane—and good. Otherwise, he could easily turn evil.
As the son of an earl and the daughter of a woodsman how did these two end up being friends? It would seem an unlikely pairing.
He was an only child growing up on his aristocratic parents’ estate, and she was the tomboy daughter of the gamekeeper. So, at first, their friendship was a matter of it being the only other kid available for them to play with. Soon they were running around the woods on the estate together like wild Indians, challenging each other in little feats of derring-do, just being kids together, before either of them had any ideas about their class or gender differences (or sexuality). It gives their relationship a very pure, innocent quality and makes it a very big thing for them to eventually become lovers during the course of the novel.
I really appreciated learning how Drake and Emily were childhood friends that always looked out for one another. Emily is spunky-innocence. Emily is unlike any other heroine of yours that I have read. Emily will sacrifice anything for Drake. Follow him to the ends of the earth. Comfort her ‘dear lunatic’ and put her life on the line to prove the man she has always loved is not a traitor. I have one simple question. Where did she come from? I’m not so sure that I could ever be that sacrificial but Emily is so endearing that her innocent acceptance is a surcharge of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE’s poignant prose.
Thanks, Christine. I agree, Emily is a unique heroine with an almost otherworldly essence. I would describe her a person of few words—deeply feeling, intuitive, instinctive. She’s a doer and a nonconformist who shrugs off convention. She’s an animal person and a healer, too. But all of that is why it never even entered her head to see herself as Drake’s future countess, even though she has a soul-bond with him. I don’t think she’d even know what to say to a Society lady. But then again, she would never be intimidated by the Patroness of Almack’s type grand dames, either.
Without giving too much away, Lord Drake asks Emily the ultimate sacrifice. Drake is prepared to sacrifice himself and the love of his best friend for the greater good. Was this scene difficult to write?
No, it really wrote itself, but I tell you what--it gave me chills when I thought of it. I don’t know how to say more without giving away major spoilers, but one day a question popped into my head: What could be worse than seeing the man you love die? Well, there actually is one thing worse, and that’s what Drake asks of Emily.
He’s counting on her, and if she says no to something that no one in their right mind would want to do, she’s going to let him down in the worst way. So she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. But…these kinds of rock-and-a-hard place situations are what makes for good stories. And thankfully, it’s a romance, so we can all rest assured everything will turn out right in the end. J
In the scene where Emily has promised Drake that when the time comes she will take aim, let her arrow fly and hit the mark was heartbreakingly beautiful. After realizing what she has just done Emily cannot bear the pain or the loss of Drake. You had me crying; Gaelen and I thank you for that.
YAYYYY!!! *grin* Thanks, that’s a huge compliment!!
I am curious to find out if creating and writing this scene where Emily is about to take her life was as difficult to write as it was to read. I actually had to close the book, set it aside and waited until I stopped crying.
Oh my gosh, now I feel bad! (sort of, lol).
After wiping the tears from my face with the back of my hand I opened the book and plundered through, emotionally wrecked, but very happy.
I know you have told reader countless times but bear with me. How many books—total- will there be in the Inferno Club series?
If all goes according to plan, there will be seven books.
I ask because in MY RUTHLESS PRINCE’S epilogue the reader gets a taste of Beau, Lord Beauchamp and the red headed minx that he has lusted after since meeting her in MY WICKED MARQUESS and is the best friend of Daphne, Lady Rotherstone, Miss Carissa Portland. Is their story up next? When? Please give us; your devoted desperate fanatic fans a sneak-peak.
That’s right, Beau and Carissa’s story, MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT, will be coming out in Autumn 2012 (maybe October, but they’re still tweaking the schedule so it could change). I’m finishing up the revisions on it now!
Oh, before I let you go I am in awe of your brand spanking redo of your website? I have been re-designing the blogs and creating the new official website for Romantic Crush Junkies Reviews eZine, which goes live on January 1, 2012 . I’m curious to know what changes you made. What new things will readers find when they stop by? What is your favorite feature to your beautiful new site?
Actually, my new website is a DIY project that I made on Weebly.com, and if anyone out there needs a website, I totally recommend them. I am not tech savvy at all, so if I can make a nice website on their system, anyone can. It’s very easy to use and there’s nothing to download or anything like that. Plus, you can make your own website for free on there, if you don’t need your own domain name. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, but since it was free, I thought I’d just try experimenting with it at first, then I realized I could actually do this! So, I worked on it little by little for several months, and finally, voila, it was ready to go live. It’s not as fancy as the professionally built ones I’ve had in the past, but because I can do all the updates myself, I can keep in better touch with my readers.
Hmm, my favorite feature at the moment is my Xtranormal video, entitled, “And Now, A Word From Her Majesty.” I had a ball making that little 3D cartoon! (Ok, so I’m easily amused.) You can watch my video at www.gaelenfoley.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. I have my first little blog now, and I can run polls. What can I say, LOL, I finally came up with the times!! Thanks, Christine, I’m glad you like it, and I would also compliment you on how beautiful the new RCJR is! It was pretty before, but now I think it looks even more gorgeous. You did a great job, too.
I have started liking doing the website building stuff. Once you figure out how it works, it’s a nice change of pace from creative writing. One of these days, I will have to finish my Regency Glossary. I still have a few letters of the alphabet to finish off. That thing has been a major project!
Gaelen, I could chat with you all day about the ins and outs of writing; the Regency era and what is your favorite thing about writing historical romance; oh, and what do you think about your loyal fans and did you ever think that readers would become so involved in your characters, series and books when you first started out. (I’ll beg. I have no shame. Feel free to answer any question that strikes your internal fancy. Seriously, I am down on bended knee with hands in prayer position asking the fates to intervene.) But we would be here all day. As a devoted reader; and having finished MY RUTHLESS PRINCE I am itching for another Gaelen Foley book stat, (it’s for my emotional well being and mental stability =)
Christine, you crack me up. I feel more lucky than I can say to have readers who join in on my fictional worlds with me. It would be so lonely to have these whole Inferno Club and Knight Family and Ascension worlds written and no one to share it with! I am grateful every day of my life for my readers, and really just delighted that there are people out there who get me—like you!
I will let you get to what you do best, writing emotional gripping stories that grab readers by the heart with delightfully engaging characters that readers hate to see go when they come to the last page.
Many thanks for having me. It’s always a joy to come and visit with you and the readers at RCJR.

Their forbidden love can no longer be denied.
His brother warriors fear the Earl of Westwood has turned traitor, but Emily Harper knows this is impossible for the man she has loved since childhood—as impossible as a marriage between them could ever be—she, the gamekeeper’s daughter and he, a bold and adventurous nobleman.
Driven by hatred and revenge, Westwood is playing a deadly game of deception, bent on destroying the enemy’s dark conspiracy from the inside, and he’s furious when Emily plunges herself into danger for his sake. Forced into close quarters, their long-suppressed desire explodes into all-consuming passion.
Emily knows her love can save him…but Drake is a man who doesn’t want to be saved.

Congratulations on your cyber launch for "The Ruthless Prince" and thanks for the invite to the party. Nothing like a good Regency novel to keep you warm in the winter! I can't wait to find out what Drake asks Emily to do!
Wow! This is truly awesome Gaelen. I'm amazed. You do write amazing stories :)! Thanks for the invite to this wonderful party and I think I'll have a cocktail on the way LOL! I love reading Romantic Regency novels. Something about Romance makes me want to daydream. With of course...a good hot cup of tea! I can't wait to see what Drake asks Emily to do. I would imagine even from reading this that she is the type of person who'd do anything for a friend or someone she really loves!

No, it's not the hors d'ouvres that keep me riveted to the Regency but the romance behind closed doors at said Rockin' parties! And I was sooo looking forward to that strip tease!!
Congratulations on the release of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. I enjoy the rogues of The Inferno Club series and their loyalty to love and country.

I love stories where childhood friends become lovers. My favorite stories take place during the Regency time period.
I like how they are all proper on the outside and full of passion on the inside. Thanks for the giveaway.

Hi Gaelen and Christine,
Great post, thanks for visiting today on RCJR!
Congratulations on your new release, I can't wait to get my hands on MY RUTHLESS PRINCE! I have been waiting to read Drake's story for a while now. And, if I know you, Ms. Gaelen, you will hit the bulls-eye again!!
YAY for all us lucky readers!
I found you by accident in the library one day while searching for books in the F section, man, was that my lucky day. I had to get all of your books for my collection after reading PRINCE CHARMING.
I really like THE KNIGHT FAMILY series, but THE INFERNO CLUB series is just fabulous too, I can't decide which is my favorite! **grin**
I'm happy to know that you will be writing more books in the series.
I like all hors d'ouvres, can't pick just one, so thank you very much on letting me sample here today.
Wishing you the best in 2012!
Have a wonderful day ladies!
P.S. ~ please do not enter me in your wonderful give-away, already have all the books.
Will take runner-up though. ;-)

Hello, hello, and Thank You for coming to our party!!! Thanks for the huzzahs on My Ruthless Prince. Release day is always so exciting and even better when I get to share it with fellow romance lovers. :)
Thanks for having me here today, Christine! I'm a big fan of RCJR. And cyber-treats that have no calories, LOL.
Hugs & Welcome again,
Gaelen
PS--Somehow I think Lord Alec Knight is the one most likely to striptease for us. That's Alec for you, ha ha.
Wow, your book sounds fantastic Gaelen! I've never read your books before (I kind of tired myself out on Regency for a while), but I could definitely see myself reading your books. :)
In Regency, I look for something beyond the generic. Part of the reason I burned out on reading them was because all of the books began to feel the same, and there weren't any details that made me feel like each book I read was unique. It was a letdown. However, reading this post and your description of your characters makes it sound like there's something more to your Regency period stories than just the basic "girl and boy from different social circles fall in love and live happily ever after."
Favorite cocktail? It's a tie between a pomegranate martini and a key lime pie martini. Both are so good!
Favorite hors d'ouvres? I'm the girl rocking the plate FULL of spanakopita!
Hi Christine and Gaelen
Great interview! I am loving the Inferno Club but that's no surprise 'cos I love all your books. Ruthless Prince is winging it's way to my door as I write, can't wait, squeee!
Congrats on the release of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE!!! I can't wait to get my hands on this one! I love the Inferno Club books. My fave cocktail would be something tropical and I like most hors d'ouvres. I am looking forward to the cake with no calories though *g*

Hello!
I can not wait to read My Rythless Prince! I have been waiting for Drake's story for so long. (And Beau's - but that's another story... literally :-p ).
What do I look for in a Regency Romance? Balls, chivalry, heroines that know themselves enough to go against convention - and the men that love them for it. :-). Oh, and heroes riding horses - LOL.
Favorite cocktail - Ameretto and club soda. Favorite hors d'ouvres - not sure. Anything cheesy in puff pastry - LOL! No shellfish, though. I have an allergy to that.
And would so I vote for a striptease by Lord Alec Kinght.
Great interview. Thank you for the contest.
Hi Readers,
I hope everyone is having a rockin' time at our launch party for MY RUTHLESS PRINCE Gaelen Foley and her 4th installment in her The Inferno Club.
Does everyone have a cocktail in hand. I would like to make a toast to the most fabulous and wonderful Galen Foley who with her rich and decadent Regency books lets her readers escape from the real world for a few sensual and exciting hours. So, please raise your glasses and give this fabulous woman three cheers...
CHEERS!
CHEERS!
CHEERS!
Now, please gather round because I am about to slice and serve up this sublime triple threat chocolate cake.
Honestly, Gaelen, thank you from the top and bottom of my heart for spending your launch day of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE with RCJR. As you know, I have been a huge fan ever since I got my hands on HER ONLY DESIRE and have been devoted ever since.
Thank you for continuing with your THE INFERNO CLUB series. I did not even have to read MY WICKED MARQUESS (but I did...at least five times)to know I would fall in love with these rogues. Thank you seems so inadequate to what you and your characters bring and give to readers! Your the best Gaelen!!!
My favorite hors d'ouvres is probably little mini quiches and for drinks, I think I'd go for champagne. Or cabernet. I'm not really a mixed drink gal.
Isis - you may enjoy my books, from what you said, reason being is that people when people don't like my books, it seems like the writers they do love the best are the ones who really stick in that comedy of manners style of Regency. Mine always have a subplot of intrigue and/or adventure. I like the heroes to be men of action (actually doing stuff) and the women to be sassy and unconventional enough to roll with it and go along for the adventure.
If you like very adventurey books, you might start with His Wicked Kiss, in which the (British born) hero is a gunrunner for South America rebels (the colonials under Simon Bolivar who wanted to break away from Spain) and the heroine is assisting her eccentric British botanist father on plant research in the Amazon jungle. That just gives you an example of how "out there" I go sometimes. LOL.
(It was Book 7 in a series, but I wrote them all so they could stand alone.) Thanks for your interest!
Gaelen
Gaelen -
I love your books and I enjoyed your interview today because it helped me to understand more not only about you but also how you develop your wonderful characters.
Even though I've loved all your books I think that your Inferno Club series is the one that's been the hardest to endure waiting between book releases! From your interview I really feel that I already have a connection to Emily. It takes a great writer to be able to present a character who is both sensitive and ompassionate but at the same time has the strength to stand up to and support a character like Drake. It's wonderful to see and understand her perserverance through your writing.
Congratulations on the release of The Ruthless Prince!
Okay, I am all for Alec showing up but I would not mind Lucien, Damien, Robert or Jack coming around...bring the wives, if that makes them feel comfortable but I am all for a Regency strip tease.
"Hey boys, I've got chocolate cake, strawberries and champagne if your really naughty."
Seriously, Gaelen could you imagine is the Knight wives and the Inferno Club wives came together and fashioned a ball where their husbands had to perform for their wives. Wives would have to invent a very good cause for the ladies of the ton would be waving around five pound notes.
Okay, my imaginations has once again run away with my good senses.
But man, you have to love these gorgeous characters. =)
Oh, Gaelen, you are soooo right that I had the boys in mind when choosing this cake.
I thought they would get a kick out of the chocolate truffles...I believe it would be a wonderful surprise for their home coming. =)
Plus, my wicked side played a part in choosing it, too. ;)
Uh-oh, Alec Knight just downed another shot of whiskey, and now his serious brothers, Robert and Damien are holding him back from taking his waistcoat off. He's laughing his head off, thinks he's charming...I'm not so sure. Exhibitionist on the loose! You can take the lad out of the gambling hell, but you can't take the gambling hell outta the lad. *g*
Christine, what did you put in that cake? Is this just a sugar buzz or is something stronger, lol...
As usual I am late to the party. Congrats on the release of "My Ruthless Prince". I am in the middle of reading "My Dangerous Duke".... What I look for in a romance novel is could this be real? Are the musings of my favorite authoreses really happen? Can two people really fall in love like that? The answer is always yes because in the end, they each have their own HEA.
My favorite cocktail is a Ameretto Sour or Khalua and Coffee.
Welcome, Susan! Fashionably late is tres chic.
And Jeanne, thanks for the kind words.
CHEERS to another round ~
Gaelen :)
In a romance - I always love the tortured hero. I have so been looking forward to Ruthless Prince to find out more about Drake. I love the hero or heroine whom are broken people and they are fixed with the love and loyalty of another person and ultimately have a very happy ending. When you are done reading , sometimes ,it is hard to see who really is the hero in the novel -the one saved or the one doing the saving :) Love your novels ...always written down in my calendar so I can pre-order them . Favorite cocktail - Mint Mojito with some tapas for an appetizer like tortilla de espana. Have a great new year! Thanks!
Wow, Laura, thank you so much--! And that was beautifully said about who is the true hero, the one being saved or doing the saving. That touched my heart.
Gaelen
Happy Release Day, Gaelen. I'm always wondering what the hero and heroine are wearing to the various balls and what they sample from the sideboard.
janie1215 AT excite DOT com
This looks like a great book! What I look for in a regency?... I like dark brooding heroes that straddle that line between good and bad a little bit. My favorite cocktail is a pina colada and my favorite party appetizer would have to be sausage balls....
justpeachy36@yahoo.com
In a Regency Romance I look for an interesting story, great characters, and a sense of the history of the time - what was going on at that time, and of course, a happily ever after.
I've always enjoyed a strawberry margarita, and my favorite munchies at a party are little quiches and pigs in a blanket with cocktail wienies.
My Ruthless Prince sounds like a fantastic story and I'm looking forward to reading it.
Barbed1951 at aol dot com
Barbara, you look very mysterious in your picture! *g* That's a book you've got in front of your face, though, right?? For a second I thought it was a bandana a la Billy the Kid. lol.
Hmm, Jane, great question...what would Drake and Emily wear to our soiree. Well, in Drake's current frame of mind, I think he'd be lurking outside in the shadows and Emily would take a few steps in, search the room for him in a glance, look privately frantic, and then run out to try to find him. Once satisfied he is not harming others or himself, if she could coax him back in (leaving the full armament of assassin gear outside, natch) - he'd be dressed all in black and she'd be a scandal for wearing boyish forest garb rather like one of Robin Hood's followers. (Maybe not the green tights though, lol.) Earth tone cloak, worn boots, leather gauntlets, her bow and arrows on her back, knife by her side.
However if we could get Emily cleaned up for presentation to the ton, I think she'd be very charming and demure in a wispy pale violet silk gown with simple lines and minimal adornments. This color would wondrously set off her unusual violet-colored eyes. She might wear a simple necklace like a cross on a gold chain...and probably a white rose in her hair (that he gave her).
HERE THEY COME NOW...What do you think?? *g*
Hello, Drake - (No sudden moves, people) - how are you feeling? Got your head screwed on right today?
Grrr. I hear they have been talking about me in this ballroom. Don't try to tempt with the cake. I know you're all out to get me.
I shall retreat before any of you makes a move to try to betray me to my enemies...
DRAKE!!!
Dash, where is he? I'm so sorry, ladies. He is not himself these days! Oh, where has he gone?
Dash it, I want to hide under the chaise longue. I am not dressed for so elegant a place...
Begging your pardon, I must find him!! Before he does something rash.
As if anyone's able to stop him (she adds under her breath before dashing out into the night)...
And she's off... just as I suspected! Don't worry, if you hear the sound of gunfire, odd medieval sort of chanting (damned creepy Prometheans) or strange screams, it's just Drake taking care of business. I'm sure Emily will soon have her beloved lunatic firmly in hand.
Stay tuned, more to come...
OMGosh, Drake! Emily! I am so excited that you stopped by.
Oh, no Drake please do not sneer so. I only wanted people to understand how difficult it has been for you. You and Emily, must know I would never do anything to jeopardize either one of you or your mission.
Before Emily headed to the Alps, frantic in search of you before your Inferno brethren I asked why must she always look after you.
She glared back at me in stupefied wonder and proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms exactly how she felt. "Dear Christine," shaking her head in dismay. "don't you get it? Drake is everything to me. no matter what you or the ton might think. I know that I can reach him. Protect him. And love him the way he has always needed to be loved."
Well, can you imagine my shock. I admit, at the time, my eyes a bit teary at her undying sentiment to a man that has crossed him off as being mentally unstable. I know, I know, you are not found of silly balls and twittering gossips but for my sake dear Drake, now that you and Emily are home and married what are your plans?
Oh, by the way, ecstatic that you came out you and Emily came back kicking hail and healthy. Oh, also thank Ms. Foley for me. Without her, I have no doubt you and your lovely Emily would have rather stayed home camped up together forgetting the world.
Best! =)
Aww Christine (I LOVED YOUR POST!) I am so touched that Emily opened up to you that way. She must have sensed that you are someone she could trust. And really, now that you mention it, it is a big compliment that Drake would overcome his demons to at least try to come out and have some fun. Fortunately Emily and all the fine ladies here have managed to put him at ease. I don't hear any more growling.
Let's see what else he has to say for himself.
Thank you, Lady Christine, for your solicitous concern. I don't know what came over me... I've had...difficulties ever since my capture by those barbaric Prometheans.
But I don't suppose we'll have to worry about them anymore (flashing a slightly evil yet devastating smile).
Alas, my hearing is still not recovered in one ear after the explosion.
EMILY: Hush up, Drake. You mustn't give the ladies spoilers. We are very happy now that we can finally wed (and who cares what Society says!)
DRAKE: But first it seems as if there's some trouble brewing back in London.
EMILY: Yes, but you and I don't have to worry about that, dearest. You need to relax and let Beau handle it.
DRAKE: Grrr.
EMILY: Never mind him, he means it in a nice way. :)
Congratulations on the release of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE.
I like a great story with characters who seem like real people. A sense of the time period but not so much that I feel like I'm in history class.
Hors d'ouvres Just about anything gluten free.
cocktail Strawberry Margarita.
Congratulations on the release of MY Ruthless Prince! It sounds great and the cover is fabulous! I love Regency romance, I love the time period, the fashions of the period and the manners of the timer period. My favorite appetizer is a tortilla pinwheel thing my friend makes - she finally gave me the recipe and I'm going to try making them this year (involves cream cheese and salsa).
Thanks for the giveaway, I haven't read any of the books in this series yet but have them on my wishlist.

Good luck and happy relase day Gaelen...
Many thanks again! I love bacon wrapped chicken appetizers and Bailey's too. Forgot about that! We usually have that at our St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Congrats on the release of "the ruthless prince" -- I've been waiting for Drake's story since book one of the series. looking forward to seeing how Emily rescues him from not only the bad guys but himself as well ;) I don't look for anything in particular in my regency romances (other than a good story & engaging characters) as I enjoy a variety of tales & moods when I read.
Congratulations to Gaelen on her new book! In Regencies I look for balls and gowns and a lovely waltz.

Congrats Gaelen and Happy New Year!!!!
