Why do you write?

MM: I write because the art of a tale well-told has always captivated me. I’m fascinated by everything about the process, from that first burning kernel of an idea to the last pass through the completed manuscript before I turn it in for the final time. Now that’s not to say that some days aren’t better than others. I usually go through a love-hate relationship with all my stories at some point, but in the end I’ve reconciled with my hero and heroine and given them the HEA they’ve earned.

Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

MM: I was surprised to learn that the practice of identifying clans by the colors and pattern of the tartan is not an ancient Scottish practice. It’s a post-Regency era construct. In 1822, King George IV visited Edinburgh—the first time an English monarch had done so in centuries. Sir Walter Scott, author of Ivanhoe, organized the royal progression like a Scottish pageant and insisted everyone wear the plaid. English courtiers scrambled furiously to come up with Scottish antecedents so they too could wear a kilt denoting their clan. The kilt was banned by the English Crown shortly after the Battle of Culloden as a Jacobite symbol. It took another English king to make the kilt a symbol of Scottish identity.

. Do you have a favorite motto?

MM: “If a little is good, a lot is a whole bunch better.” This is closely followed by “Women in this family do NOT clean fish.”

Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

MM: I love King Arthur. Honor, courage, and a great heart. Does it get any better than that? My favorite heroine is probably Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables. She’s smart, inventive and in more than a little trouble most of the time.

Which fictional character would you hang out with?

MM: I would so hang out with Jo March. Little Women is one of my all time favorite reads.

What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

MM: I’ve been so kissed by the cover faeries, it’s hard to choose from all my gorgeous covers, but I have to say my upcoming Lord of Fire and Ice is a strong contender for first place in my heart. It incorporates so many elements from the story—the dragonship in the background, the hot hero with flame dancing on his palm in the foreground—I love it! In case you’re worried about him, I should share that he’s a fire mage. He’s just playing with the flames. What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

MM: How all the angst and conflict in my life is all in my mind… and in my stories. My actual life is pretty tame most of the time. I do enjoy traveling and trying new things, but most of time, I’m your basic housefrau. I clean the house, walk the dogs, and avoid cooking whenever I can.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

MM: How many of my books have been downloaded by pirates. It never fails to amaze me that people who would never shoplift, will download a pirated book and not realize they’ve stolen from the author and her publisher. At least, I hope it’s because they don’t realize it.

If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

MM: Definitely forward. I’m looking toward the time when there’s a pill that will let me eat all the ice cream I want and not gain an ounce. ;-)

Mia, please share with us more about your recent Sourcebook release, Sins of the Highlander?

MM: Sins of the Highlander is the story of “Mad Rob” MacLaren and his quest to avenge the death of his beloved wife by stealing his enemy’s bride from the altar. As you can imagine, he didn’t really think this plan through. Elspeth Stewart shows Rob that his heart is not dead and that love is about second chances, redemption and forgiveness. Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?

MM: I’ll have to be a contrarian and say neither. The most important thing is character. Think about the books that stick with you. It’s not because of the author’s lyrical prose. It’s not because of plot twists that rival the Gordian knot. It’s because the characters became real to you. You lived their adventure with them. They became part of you. Character is the most important thing.

MM: Sherry Thomas, Mary Jo Putney, Victoria Alexander, Madeline Hunter, Shana Abe, Jennifer Ashley… the list, like Bilbo’s road, goes ever, ever on.

What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?

MM: My next release is Touch of a Rogue (Feb 28^th). It’s the story of Jacob Preston, a man with the “gift of touch.” He sees visions when he touches metal objects. It’s a useful ability for helping Lady Julianne, the widowed Countess of Cambourne, find a magical set of Druid daggers. But like the ancient blades, the lady has secrets. He’ll have to rely on other means to uncover those, one delectable layer at a time.

Next summer, Touch of a Scoundrel and Lord of Fire and Ice will be hitting the shelves. I’m also planning a number of ebook releases this year for readers who, like me, are addicted to their ereaders. Readers, please give a warm welcome to New York Times bestselling author Laura Lee Guhrke. She has brought along a pair of friends to chat about her fabulous Avon romance December 2011 release TROUBLE AT THE WEDDING which is the third book of her ABANDONED AT THE ALTAR series and features American heiress, Miss Annabel Wheaton and devilishly seductive, Christian Du Quesne, Duke of Scarborough. Say hi every one.

Laura, I would like to start with you, if you do not mind. I love your series, ABANDONED AT THE ALTER. How did you come up with the premise?

L: We all know that line from the wedding ceremony that goes, “If any man can show just cause why these two people may not be joined in matrimony, let him speak now or forever hold his peace.” Well, I wondered what would happen if a hero did that at the heroine’s wedding, so I wrote a book about it.

I noticed that the series is set in the late 19th century early 20th? What was it about that time period that peaked your curiosity to set your series in?

L: The year the book is set is 1904. I love writing books set around the turn of the century. That sliver of time from the 1890’s to the 1920’s was a point where the whole world changed irrevocably. The landed aristocracy was in lush, full flower and no one in it could admit it was dying. Issues like women’s rights were coming to the forefront. Inventions that would change everything about our lives—telephones, airplanes, radio, electricity—were coming so fast, no one could catch a breath. And, of course, war loomed on the horizon. Yet, the Edwardian era was more lush and lavish than any that preceded it. As the Countess of Fingall put it, “We danced on the edge of an abyss.” That is the stuff of great stories.

Name ten (10) fascinating thing you learned about that time period.

L: Ten? Okay, here goes.

1. Women wore rings around their nipples for the titillation.

2. Newspapers were ironed to set the ink.

3. Gay men were quite often hired as footmen because they wouldn’t mess with the maids.

4. English people were eating corn flakes (Post Toasties) for breakfast right along with kidneys and bacon.

5. Thank-you notes were meant to ooze flattery and were called “Collinses” because of that slimy king of flattery, Mr. Collins from Austen’s P&P a century earlier.

6. The flight of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk in 1903 was not widely reported at the time and most did not take it seriously. Until well into 1906, many thought the event a fraud.

7. The “loo” was so-called because of Lady Louisa Anson. She was so rude that children played a prank on her by putting the name card from her door at a country house party on the door of the water closet, and the maid (obviously in on the joke or not very bright) kept delivering her tea there. The story spread and the water-closet became known as the loo.

8. Butlers were required to be tall, at least five foot ten, and the taller you were, the more you were paid.

9. One of the reasons bicycling was so popular with young ladies was that it enabled them to escape from their chaperones.

10. The most popular treatment for burns was to put hot wax on them. Don’t ask me who thought THAT was a good idea. Ouch.

Okay, I want to give a warm welcome to Miss Annabel Wheaton and Christian Du Quesne, the Duke of Scarborough. (Waving franticly trying to get the besotted couple attention). I know you two have gone through a lot to get to your happily ever after so I will try to be brief. (Blushes scarlet as she catches the intimate glance between the honeymooners), clears her throat...Okay, so you two are still in the honeymoon stage, I see. I would like to know what each of you thought when you first laid eyes on the other. Was it love at first sight?

A: Lord, no!

C: Definitely not.

L: They are so deluded.

Annabel, I understand that when you met you were actually engaged to another man, is that right?

A: Yes, the Earl of Rumsford.

I also, heard a rumor that the wedding was taking place on aboard the ship Atlantic on your way to England. What made you decide to throw a society wedding on a ship?

L: Annabel is too embarrassed to admit the reason, so I’ll explain for her. Rumsford (being a shallow, smarmy jerk) didn’t want to be seen by all of London society marrying a New Money Nobody from Mississippi. Annabel didn’t want to have the wedding in New York because she was afraid no one would come (an irrational fear, given she was marrying an earl, but understandable given that no one had shown up for her debutante ball). So, having the wedding on an ocean liner taking the engaged couple to England was a compromise.

Annabel, did you have any doubts about the man you were marrying?

A: Not a one.

Were you completely and totally filled with excitement to be moving to England?

A: I was ecstatic. I was all set to be an English countess, and happy as a girl could be. I was looking forward to living on a beautiful country estate and to be accepted by society at last. But Christian ruined everything.

C: I did. It was smashing good fun.

Your Grace, I believe you knew Annabel’s intended. You were school chums, if I’m not mistaken?

C: Calling us chums is a bit of a stretch, darling. Suffice it to say we were acquainted.

Why were you on the Atlantic? I thought I heard you were staying in New York for a while, something to do with finding investors, is that true?

C: Quite so, but when the uncle of an American heiress offers a man half a million dollars to stop a gorgeous woman from marrying an idiot, how can he refuse?

Now, after you stormed into the wedding, pronounced that you and Annabel had an indiscretion, (clearing the throat and feeling a bit flushed) I have always wondered what your true intent was when you barreled through the doors and promptly set Annabel’s world upside down?

C: Forgive me, but I fear you’ve been misinformed. I didn’t storm in.

A: How would you know what you did? You were drunk.

C: Well, yes. Sodding. But the point is that I didn’t barrel through the doors. That’s far too scandalous, even for me. And I didn’t imply anything untoward about Annabel.

A: Oh, yes you did.

C: Let’s not argue in front of the press, darling. You know how they are, ready to print the most outrageous gossip at the drop of a hat. The important thing is that I certainly didn’t intend to turn Annabel’s world upside down. But the idea of her married to that pompous ass, Rummy, for the rest of her days was too much for me to bear, I’m afraid.

When you met, did you believe in true love? You can all answer. I’m quite curious to know all of your opinions.

A: I believed in true love for other people, but not for me. And I didn’t want anything to do with it..

C: But she couldn’t resist me.

A: (snort)

C: I never believed in true love. I was a cynical bastard, I’m sorry to say.

Annabel and Christian if you could turn back time to change one thing about what happened, would you and what would you change?

A: I wouldn’t change a thing.

C: Neither would I.

L: I would, but I say that with every book.

Annabel, name the one thing about Christian that you believe won your heart.

A: That bad boy look of his. Gets me all weak-kneed every time.

Your Grace, name one thing about Annabel that you believe changed your outlook on love.

C: That a girl like her would think of marrying beneath her to wed a man like me is astonishing. And because she loves me? I never cease to be amazed by it.

Laura, while you were writing Annabel and Christian’s story was there a scene that popped out the most?

L: As I said, I always wanted to do a man standing up and objecting at a woman’s wedding. Aside from that though, the scene I personally like the most is when they’re in the Ford Model A. And in the Turkish bath.

C: I like that scene, too.

A: You would.

Laura, what is more difficult to write: a intense sexual scene or a heart-wrenching emotional scene? Why?

L: You have my Edwardian characters blushing. I think a sexual scene is harder. An emotional scene is actually easy, IF I’ve done the proper characterization. Given that, an emotionally charged scene is quite fun to write. Sexual scenes are tough because there’s a lot going on—physically and emotionally—and you want the point of view of each character during the scene. And you’re describing something you’ve described dozens of times before, an act that is basically the same each time. And there’s very little dialogue. All that makes a love scene much harder.

What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?

L: Creating stories is a magical job. But it’s also very hard work. The words don’t just flow onto the page. At least, they don’t for me. I’m rather a slow writer. And the process of creation can be agony.

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

I love to fly fish. I hate sushi. I learned to wakeboard a few years ago. And I go on marathon gloms of television shows. I once watched 12 episodes of House in one day.

C: What is television? What is sushi? And what the devil is a glom?

When you were writing “TROUBLE AT THE WEDDING” did you have music playing in the background? If yes, what type? Does music play an intricate part in your writing?

L: I don’t usually listen to music when I write. I know other authors who do that, but I can’t. It distracts me from hearing my characters voices, and I have to hear them to write them. The only exception to this is classical music. That I can listen to, although I usually don’t.

What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves?

L: I am working on a brand new Edwardian series. Too soon to give a lot of details, but the heroine has a secret that when it’s revealed, will rock the hero’s whole world. The book is scheduled for December. It doesn’t have a title yet, but anyone can check my website for the details. Or better yet, sign up for my newsletter. Why do you write?

PR: Because my characters need homes, my frustrations need release, because I can’t kick the world and make it change, so I can try to make people forget their troubles for a while.

Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

PR: Music can affect plants and some people have what is called musical intelligence—they’re far more sensitive to rhythm, tone, and pitch than most of us.

Do you have a favorite motto?

PR: Anything can be done with perseverance.

Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

PR: That would require calling on my lamentable memory for names. How about Atticus in To Kill a Mocking Bird and Mame from Auntie Mame. Fair-minded and intrepid!

Which fictional character would you hang out with?

PR: Call me old-fashioned but Rhett Butler still rings my chimes, now that he’s over his stupid obsession with that Scarlett chick.

What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

PR: I’m bad at graphics. I like sparklies and pretty people. So the cover on The Lure of Song and Magic covers all my favorite bases!

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

PR: That I’m a klutz? I figure they already know I burn technology but I can break a wrist getting off a horse. Which explains today’s brevity (I recently did so while on vacation)!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?

PR: I’m pretty used to the commonness of my name by now. Very little surprises me. I die daily. I’ve written everything from scholarly treatises to articles on religion in our local paper. I really need a new name.

If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

PR: Forward. I like bathrooms. And chocolate.

I have an urban fantasy under a pseudonym (Told you I wanted a new name!) coming out from Pocket in August. Okay, Ms. Phillips has been here before when SERENDIPTY came out in September 2011, but I’m a huge fan and after three years of reviewing, interviewing and blogging I still become star struck. I have taken a few deep breaths, cracked my knuckles and now I am ready to get down to the nitty-gritty about the second novel in her sizzling Serendipity series, DESTINY. Get on your mark. Get set…Lets Go!

Carly, it is a pleasure to have you back on RCJR. It must be fate or even better…it must be DESTINY.

Wow. I’m so humbled by your introduction. Thank you!!!! I’m thrilled to be here!

For the few readers who are not familiar with your Serendipity series would you mind giving us the 411 on what this series is all about?

At heart, Serendipity is a series about family. In broad strokes, it’s a small town series with people you’ll meet and hopefully grow to love. The first three Serendipity books, Serendipity, Destiny and Karma (5/12) introduce you to the Barron brothers, three siblings who were traumatized when their parents were killed in a car accident and their oldest brother, Ethan, feeling responsible, fled town. Serendipity picks up ten years later with Ethan’s return and the estranged relationship between the brothers. Ethan’s story is first, when the dark brooding hero reunites with the rich girl who “got away.” Destiny is Nash’s story, and then Dare’s in Karma. In between is a short story in eBook form called Kismet that tells the story of two characters, one of whom you meet in Serendipity named Lissa Gardelli. So small town, family, friends, lies, betrayals, reunions … that’s what the Serendipity series is all about.

I noticed that quite a few of your books are set in a small upstate town in New York? I adore this, since, I too am a girl who has grown up in a small Upstate Town…actually its called a village…Lake George, that is, but let’s not cut hairs. =) For you, as a writer, what is the draw for small town living and creating its residents?

I’m not sure I live in what would be considered a typical small town, but creating them seems to come naturally to me. I can feel the small town as I write it, I picture the small town within where I live, the main street in many small towns are similar. The characters can be people we all know or have met. I love writing and creating it.

What was the precipice for your Serendipity series?

It’s always challenging coming up with something you haven’t done before. The Lucky series was three cousins, the Hot Zone was three sisters, Cross My Heart and Under the Boardwalk were three best friends in foster care. For the first time with Serendipity, I focused on the town first and not the characters. First came the Harrington mansion, the house on the hill, the place that was the symbol in town – the mansion meant different things to different people – a representation of wealth and status some revered, others hated, the downfall of Faith’s father (Serendipity) and the thing to aspire to for Ethan (also Serendipity.) Then I created the characters – the brothers came to life from there.

How did you come up with the family dynamics?

I knew I wanted a bad boy in Ethan for the first book. Nash defined himself in Serendipity, the angriest brother, the least forgiving, who saw things in black and white. Then came Dare, with the charming, easy going smile that hid a world of pain. I can’t tell you how I came up with the dynamics, only that they came to me!

How you do come up with characters names is a question, as a writer; my family continually asks me. So, Carly, I am passing the buck to you. How do you come up with your characters names? Do you have a magic naming hat that you use? Or does a name pop in your head? I seriously am in need of knowing. =)

Magic naming hat, LOL. I like that! The truth is I love the soap opera magazines – between character names and actors’ real names, there is a wealth of mixing and matching I can do from there! Truth!

DESTINY is all about Nash Barron, cynical about love, but is a guy that stepped up to the plate when his older brother, Ethan, (SERENDIPITY) high tailed it out of town. From reading Serendipity, I had a feeling that Nash would be a hard nut to crack and was pleasantly surprised that I found myself coming to care for him. Was there one thing as you created Nash Barron that stood out to you? Did this light the preverbal match beneath creating his character?

I was so shocked at reader reaction to Nash (negative) because as I wrote Serendipity, I felt his hurt, anger and pain. I hope Destiny gives them insight into the man he’s become and why, and then see how hard he gets knocked down – he has to take a long hard look at himself and decide if he likes what he sees. Nash seemed to me to be born to take care of everyone (in his mind) and when those same family members he cares so deeply for end up with secrets they never shared with him, he can’t understand why. It’s that tough nut, that intractability that he has to face in himself before he can have a future.

I loved Kelly Moss. She is so perfect for Nash. Tell us a bit about her and how you created her.

THANK YOU. That was another shock to me – readers who hated Kelly for leaving Tess with Ethan the way she did. Again, I hope they come to see the reasons behind what she did and why. Kelly was doing everything in Tess’ best interest, not her own. Kelly was a flash on the page in Serendipity, which I guess is why readers couldn’t relate to her. I’m not sure why she became Nash’s heroine in my mind but it just … fit!

Was there one particular scene that you found easier or most difficult to write?

The scene that stands out most in my mind is the one where Kelly’s mom shows up. Her anger and how the brothers protect her (and Tess) and calm her down, even as Nash is slowly realizing his life is falling apart … that stuck with me. Not sure if that is because it was difficult or easy but it was memorable for me!

After reading DESTINY I ended up scouring B&N’s your bookshelf and found your eBook KISMET: A NOVELLA. LOVED IT! How many books are there going to be in the SERENDIPITY series?

As of now, Berkley and I just agreed to another three books, consisting of characters you will meet in Karma. So definitely another three … and who knows in between or beyond that. If reader reaction allows me to write more, that would be fine with me!

The way I envision the series is in 3 book story arcs like Serendipity/Destiny/Karma and the Barron brothers, then moving on to another family or series of characters in the town with a story arc weaving through all three.

Curious, when will KARMA being released? Oh, and can we have a sneak peak, please?

Karma will be out in May 2012, 4 months after Destiny. We can talk to Berkley and see what we can arrange =)

Do you have Ethan, Nash and Dare’s baby sister, Tess having her own story some day?

Maybe! Tess definitely needs to grow up a bit first … we’ll see how that goes. I think it would be great though. I’ve never followed through with a teenage character that way and it would be challenging!

While writing this series were there any characters that jumped out that you are thinking of writing about?

I think Kate Andrews and Nick Mancini deserve a story … I’d love to know who readers want to see!

IMMORTAL HOPE: The Curse of the Templars

Why do you write?

Because I can’t not write.

I’ve been writing since I was small; I remember writing a poem for my grandmother around age 7. It turned into passing notebooks with my friends in junior high and we all built on each other’s stories. That turned into writing my first romance novel at 17.

I’ve spent time not writing, and I am a very unpleasant person to be around. Right now, for the last month or so I’ve been working on the dual releases I have this month, and haven’t had much time for creative writing. I feel the need gnawing at me, the demand to get creative words on paper.

Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.

The research itself was the product of many years of studying both the Templar and the early Medieval era, so I can’t say that I recall one eye-opening factor in the research. It happened over too long of a time span for anything to stand out.

But something startling did happen after the book was written and sold. The local building I chose to house the Templars was, at the time of writing, just a creepy old local building with not much known or easily accessible history. I learned right around the time I got a cover that it was actually owned by a secret society and housed the wives and orphans of those secret society members.

A fitting coincidence!

Do you have a favorite motto?

This one stuck with me years ago – “If you dream it, you can become it.” I believe it actually was on a ballet picture I purchased in my early twenties. But I think it’s a very apt, very positive message, and I believe in it whole-heartedly.

Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?

My heroine probably everyone knows – Jo March, from Little Women.

Heroes? Well, the first three immediate answers that came to mind, aren’t heroes. They are villains: Raistlin Magiere (from DragonLance), Durza (from Eragon), and Hannibal Lector.

But Heroes… Julian Mayfair…no, he’s not a hero either.

Okay, Hamlet. I think we can all agree he falls under ‘hero’. Shew! Boy, that was hard. I think I’m drawn to the grittier, more morally ambiguous characters overall. A good villain will really light up a fiction work for me and make it memorable.

Which fictional character would you hang out with?

Don’t laugh – I’d love to spend a whole day with the characters from Beauty and the Beast, prior to their transformation.

On a more realistic, less childlike level… I’d give my eye-teeth to hang out with Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. Maybe I could convince him into fashioning that magic wand I’m always seemingly in need of. One that will clean my house for me, do farm chores, cook, fix problems, and clone me so I can write twenty-four hours out of the day.

What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?

I am pretty darn fond of Cassandra Clare’s covers, all the way around. They are so engaging, so beautiful, and always entice me to pick up the books, and at the very least, read the cover copy.

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

I’m not really sure, to be honest. The thing most people blink about is when they learn that my degree is in IT and Technology, not something more right-brained. I once interviewed for a job I really wanted, only to find out that the man scheduled the interview just to meet someone who was both an author and an IT professional. Right and left brain – he didn’t know it was possible to combine creativity with the more linear, more logical programmer’s thought process.

What’s the strangest thing you have ever learned by Googling your name?

Nothing really strange about Claire Ashgrove, honestly. Tori St. Claire on the other hand… evidently there’s a couple porn stars who have deviations of that name. Which might explain all the odd, foreign hits I get on my website. Hee!

If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?

Backwards backwards backwards! I would love to go all the way back to ancient societies. Sure, it was a harder life in many, many ways. But I am really partial to the simplicity that comes with a lack of modern devices and technology.

Claire, please share with us more about your new series The Curse of The Templars and its first installment IMMORTAL HOPE released by Doherty Publishing (Tor Romance).

Well… IMMORTAL HOPE is founded on the question, “What happened to the Templars?” It’s a dark, paranormal romance, in which Templar knights, cursed for defying the archangels, are locked in an eternal battle against the most unholy, Azazel, who is seeking to rise to the highest throne. A feat that is accomplished with the acquisition of eight sacred relics.

The knights, however, are running out of time. With each vile being they kill, darkness enters their souls, until they will eventually convert to a Knight of Azazel. One promise remains to give them hope – the coming of the seraphs, who carry the light to heal their dying souls.

Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?

You know, I have never fully understood ‘voice’. I mean… I know what it is, and yet, I… don’t. Laugh. How’s that for vague? Given such, I have to go with story. If the plot doesn’t grab me, it doesn’t matter how entertaining voice might be, or how lilting, etc. I want meat and bones, grit and emotion. If the writing is short and sweet, or long and descriptive, I don’t really care as long as the tone fits the plot and the plot keeps me wondering what might happen next.

What is the best part of being a writer? What is the worst?
CA: Writing and being able to tell a story is a gift. I’m still amazed that when I sit down to write, it’s just there. There is no other explanation except that I truly believe each of us has a special gift that we are supposed to share with others. I’ve had characters arguing in my head for years—some of the stories I still haven’t had time to tell, but I hope to get around to it this year—my first year as a full time writer. I love the process: having characters pop into my head, creating the plot, and sometimes righting a wrong by giving someone who deserved a happily ever after in real life one in fiction.

Hmmm…the worst? It is a solitary occupation, so when I have to go be a social butterfly when I’d rather have my nose buried in a book or be chained to my laptop writing, it’s hard to remember this is all part of being an author. It definitely doesn’t come naturally to me.

Why do you write?
CA: I have to—voices of characters that I haven’t written yet wake me up in the middle of the night, while characters in current works-in-progress argue in my head. I tried not writing once and it didn’t work.

Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.
CA: When doing research for JESSE, the 3rd book in The Secret Life of Cowboys trilogy, I discovered that Prussic Acid – found in certain Sorghum and Sudan grasses is toxic and can kill in a matter of fifteen or twenty minutes. The plant cells contain a type of cyanogenic compound and once they break the Prussic Acid forms. This can happen due to freezing, cutting, drought, trampling, chewing, etc. There are a number of plants that contain these compounds. Cattle and sheep are most at risk because they graze. To avoid this deadly problem, some ranchers plant their own grain, but all are very diligent about the areas their herd grazes in.

Do you have a favorite motto?
CA: Absolutely…it’s my Purcell ancestors’ motto: Aut Vincam, Aut Periam: translation: I will either conquer or perish. I have used it in my Medieval trilogy.

Do you have a favorite fictional hero? Favorite fictional heroine?
CA: That’s a tough call because so many heroes and heroines have touched my heart over the years. I guess it’s a tie between Iain Maitland and Lady Judith from Julie Garwood’s THE SECRET, or Brodick Buchanan and Lady Gillian from Julie Garwood’s RANSOM.
Which fictional character would you hang out with?
CA: Either one, it would be amazing to hang out in Medieval Scotland. J

What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?
CA: It’s hard to decide between Amanda Quick’s MISTRESS (it reminds me of Cinderella’s coach) and Patricia Rice’s re-release of MERELY MAGIC (it reminds me of a Midsummer Night’s Dream.)

What would readers be surprised to learn about you?
CA: I don’t really like to talk about myself—but ask me about my kids or my new gorgeous grandbaby Jack. J

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned by Googling your name?
CA: I had no idea that TYLER was available for iTunes…pretty cool. J

If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose? Why?
CA: I’d go backward. Every time I hear bagpipes I have this image in my head of standing alone atop a hill on a misty morning with the wail of the pipes surrounding me. The first time I attended the Hunter Mountain Celtic Festival and watched the massed march of pipe and drum bands it was foggy. You could hear the wail of the pipes, but couldn’t see them. When that first piper stepped out of the fog, I got chills…there was a brief pause before the others joined him. I remember seeing a redheaded piper standing in the middle of one of the first bands, he wore a bright red coat and it was as if Jaime from Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER stepped out of her book and onto the mountain. For a moment I couldn’t speak…I could only stare.

C.H., please tell us about your latest Sourcebooks release, Dylan: The Secret Life of Cowboys.
CA: Dylan is the quiet, middle brother. He isn’t big on words, unless the situation warrants it. He doesn’t want to fill in for Tyler at the Lucky Star, but once a Garahan gives his word, he keeps it, so he has no choice. On his third and last day working at the club, a blonde, brunette, and a redhead walk into the bar…but there’s just something different about the brunette…maybe it’s the blindfold. When they whip the blindfold off the pretty brunette, Dylan tosses his lasso around her and starts to reel her in. Ronnie DelVecchio fights him every step of the way, but once he gets her in his arms and looks down into her siren-green eyes, he’s a goner, the fact that she’s spitting like a mad cat just adds to the attraction for him. Ronnie’s leaving NJ and her ex behind, when she gets to Pleasure, Texas, she realizes she’s driven far enough and wants to stay. Sparks and tempers fly whenever the two are in the same room. Ronnie’s shop is destroyed and she needs a carpenter to put it back together…destiny steps in when Tyler’s fiancée, Emily, tells Ronnie she knows someone. Just her luck it’s Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome from the club…good thing he left his lasso home.

Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?
CA: It’s funny, but I don’t really think about either one when I’m writing. It depends on the story, but I’ve created stories around characters that pop into my head and then other times, I’ve had an idea morph into a plot and then the characters decide to start talking to me.

It is not hard to see why this magnetically creative author has won over legions of fans with her sexy, seductive Lords of Vice series. Now, she has done it once again with SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD. I have been waiting with baited breath for Christopher Avery Courtland, Earl of Vanewright from the moment he stepped on the pages of ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE. In fact, I have been completely and unapologetically infatuated with this broad shoulder, dark haired gorgeous sex-god of a man. I was so desperate to know more about this characters and manic for a release date that I could not help but fan-stalk Ms. Hawkins for any and all information about SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD. Vane lives up to his name. he is a charmer, gorgeous and devilishly seductive. From the moment readers meet Vane he has a way of engaging a reader with his hypnotic character. The draw for me is his relationship with his elderly mother, Lady Netherly. To understand that you have to look at the way he treats women. Being a Lord of Vice he has honed his sexual prowess from the time he was a teen. He loves woman and women love to do anything for Vane. Thing is, this charismatic charmer has a heart of gold and worships his meddling mother. Even though he understands and reluctantly puts up with her needling he cannot at time feel a bit frustrated at her full out battle to see her only son settled down. Truth is, Christopher (vane) adores his mother. One particular scene where his mother is sobbing he enfolds her in his arms and sooths her worries by stroking her back ensuring her that she has his forgiveness. I admit, I absolutely adore their relationship. They are just so wonderful together. I also, adored his relationship with his teasing his older and younger sisters. This interaction with his women folks show a deeper side to this Lord of Vice than just what the ton his led to believe.

To explain the relationship between vane and his father is not as complicated as one might think. The present Marquess of Vanewright is in his early eighties. He was n his late fifties when Vane was born and already had two sons, one whom he had been schooling to take the title. Tragedies struck leaving Christopher the heir. Vane’s father was devoted to his oldest son and when he passed away it seems a part of his father’s heart went with his now deceased son. Ms. Hawkins’s is such a wonderful writer with her beautiful imagery as she showcases the strained relationship between father and son. This was an eye-opening scene where Hawkins’s shows the pivotal reason why Vane is so protective of whom he is and what he will do in his life. This is where readers see how determined he is to live his own life as he chooses…even if that means making his sire a bit uncomfortable in doing so. I felt for Vane. It seems even being an Earl and the most sought after Lord of Vice he still feels the needs to prove he is good enough. Having his marriage minded mother trying to meddle in his prospective marital situation would make any man doubt his sanity..

Enter Miss Isabel Thorne. In a word, she is PERFECT for our devilishly seductive Lord of Vice. The impact that Isabel has in Vanes world was such a pleasure to watch. As Vane’s wall tumbled down whenever he was in Isabel’s presence was priceless. For a girl always in the shadow of her family and her selfish sister Isabel’s voice was powerfully strong. The way she matched temperament and wits with Vane was pure magic and mad read SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD was beyond a pleasure.

SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD as she takes meddling to a whole new level. Be prepared to fall hopelessly devoted to one of the most endearing characters I have read so far. A book does not survive on mercy and goodness alone. To hinder our hero and heroine Ms. Hawkins’s has devised a few characters that I would have loved to slap. Isabel’s devious sister, Delia played her part perfectly. She is selfish and beautiful and believes…since she was raised to believe…that everything and everyone will do her biding. The little digs she gives Isabel will make a readers heart wretch. I cannot forget Mr. Marcus Ruddel, who plays both sides of the fence, more accurate, sisters. Add in an alcoholic mother, a dismissed mistress and shake in the rules of Regency and the passion of a rogue and you have one masterful written story bound to entertain readers for hours to come.

Award-winning Hawkins has once again given readers a wonderful written story, full of surprises in yet another fascinating installment in her Lords of Vice, SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD. I am having a brain freeze, so bear with me for a moment. I have so many questions to ask New York Times bestselling author Gaelen Foley and find myself stumped where to start. I have been told that starting at the beginning is the best place, so readers wish me luck and here I go.

Gaelen, as always I am so psyched that you are here today, sharing with RCJR eZine readers about your latest in the Inferno Club series, MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. I would love for you to share with RCJR’s reader more about this book.

Christine, I am seriously thrilled and delighted to be here on my official release day for MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. Thanks for inviting me. Your blog is one of my favorite romance places on the web. I am happy to celebrate my cyber-launch party with you all!

What is the first thing that struck you in writing MY RUTHLESS PRINCE?

Well, let’s see. One of the first things was that I have not written as tortured a hero as Drake in a long time. I think he’s right up there with Darius Santiago from PRINCESS. It’s also got a very unusual heroine, Emily, as you mentioned below. Another challenge was a new-to-me and different setting, a castle in the Bavarian Alps.

I have been waiting (Waiting For A Girl Like You by legendary rock band Foreigner playing repeatedly in my head) for Drake, the Earl of Westwood and childhood best friend, Miss Emily Harper’s story from the very first Drake popped up in MY WICKED MARQUESS. I am over the moon that it is finally here. Did you ever think your readers would be this devoted to Drake when you began to create this character?

I know that I was, and that’s usually a good sign. I definitely did not expect Drake to start stealing every scene he appears in through the series, lol. I’ve always had a soft spot for the really tortured heroes, though, and he certainly fits the bill.

I love the relationship between Drake and Emily. For readers, yet to have read MY RUTHLESS PRINCE would tell us more about their unique relationship?

With these two, it’s like they have their own little world together that’s separate from the rest of the world at large. He is really the only man in the world to her, and for him, she is the embodiment of everything pure and good that he is fighting to protect. As his deadly missions for the Order lead him to into increasingly dark places, he relies on their relationship to keep him tethered to the light. Otherwise, he could be in danger, himself, of going into the darkness and never coming back. She’s the one who keeps him sane—and good. Otherwise, he could easily turn evil.

As the son of an earl and the daughter of a woodsman how did these two end up being friends? It would seem an unlikely pairing.

He was an only child growing up on his aristocratic parents’ estate, and she was the tomboy daughter of the gamekeeper. So, at first, their friendship was a matter of it being the only other kid available for them to play with. Soon they were running around the woods on the estate together like wild Indians, challenging each other in little feats of derring-do, just being kids together, before either of them had any ideas about their class or gender differences (or sexuality). It gives their relationship a very pure, innocent quality and makes it a very big thing for them to eventually become lovers during the course of the novel.

I really appreciated learning how Drake and Emily were childhood friends that always looked out for one another. Emily is spunky-innocence. Emily is unlike any other heroine of yours that I have read. Emily will sacrifice anything for Drake. Follow him to the ends of the earth. Comfort her ‘dear lunatic’ and put her life on the line to prove the man she has always loved is not a traitor. I have one simple question. Where did she come from? I’m not so sure that I could ever be that sacrificial but Emily is so endearing that her innocent acceptance is a surcharge of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE’s poignant prose.

Thanks, Christine. I agree, Emily is a unique heroine with an almost otherworldly essence. I would describe her a person of few words—deeply feeling, intuitive, instinctive. She’s a doer and a nonconformist who shrugs off convention. She’s an animal person and a healer, too. But all of that is why it never even entered her head to see herself as Drake’s future countess, even though she has a soul-bond with him. I don’t think she’d even know what to say to a Society lady. But then again, she would never be intimidated by the Patroness of Almack’s type grand dames, either.

Without giving too much away, Lord Drake asks Emily the ultimate sacrifice. Drake is prepared to sacrifice himself and the love of his best friend for the greater good. Was this scene difficult to write?

No, it really wrote itself, but I tell you what--it gave me chills when I thought of it. I don’t know how to say more without giving away major spoilers, but one day a question popped into my head: What could be worse than seeing the man you love die? Well, there actually is one thing worse, and that’s what Drake asks of Emily.

He’s counting on her, and if she says no to something that no one in their right mind would want to do, she’s going to let him down in the worst way. So she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. But…these kinds of rock-and-a-hard place situations are what makes for good stories. And thankfully, it’s a romance, so we can all rest assured everything will turn out right in the end. J

In the scene where Emily has promised Drake that when the time comes she will take aim, let her arrow fly and hit the mark was heartbreakingly beautiful. After realizing what she has just done Emily cannot bear the pain or the loss of Drake. You had me crying; Gaelen and I thank you for that.

YAYYYY!!! *grin* Thanks, that’s a huge compliment!!

I am curious to find out if creating and writing this scene where Emily is about to take her life was as difficult to write as it was to read. I actually had to close the book, set it aside and waited until I stopped crying.

Oh my gosh, now I feel bad! (sort of, lol).

After wiping the tears from my face with the back of my hand I opened the book and plundered through, emotionally wrecked, but very happy.

I know you have told reader countless times but bear with me. How many books—total- will there be in the Inferno Club series?

If all goes according to plan, there will be seven books.

I ask because in MY RUTHLESS PRINCE’S epilogue the reader gets a taste of Beau, Lord Beauchamp and the red headed minx that he has lusted after since meeting her in MY WICKED MARQUESS and is the best friend of Daphne, Lady Rotherstone, Miss Carissa Portland. Is their story up next? When? Please give us; your devoted desperate fanatic fans a sneak-peak.

That’s right, Beau and Carissa’s story, MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT, will be coming out in Autumn 2012 (maybe October, but they’re still tweaking the schedule so it could change). I’m finishing up the revisions on it now!

Oh, before I let you go I am in awe of your brand spanking redo of your website? I have been re-designing the blogs and creating the new official website for Romantic Crush Junkies Reviews eZine, which goes live on January 1, 2012. I’m curious to know what changes you made. What new things will readers find when they stop by? What is your favorite feature to your beautiful new site?

Actually, my new website is a DIY project that I made on Weebly.com, and if anyone out there needs a website, I totally recommend them. I am not tech savvy at all, so if I can make a nice website on their system, anyone can. It’s very easy to use and there’s nothing to download or anything like that. Plus, you can make your own website for free on there, if you don’t need your own domain name. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, but since it was free, I thought I’d just try experimenting with it at first, then I realized I could actually do this! So, I worked on it little by little for several months, and finally, voila, it was ready to go live. It’s not as fancy as the professionally built ones I’ve had in the past, but because I can do all the updates myself, I can keep in better touch with my readers.

Hmm, my favorite feature at the moment is my Xtranormal video, entitled, “And Now, A Word From Her Majesty.” I had a ball making that little 3D cartoon! (Ok, so I’m easily amused.) You can watch my video at www.gaelenfoley.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. I have my first little blog now, and I can run polls. What can I say, LOL, I finally came up with the times!! Thanks, Christine, I’m glad you like it, and I would also compliment you on how beautiful the new RCJR is! It was pretty before, but now I think it looks even more gorgeous. You did a great job, too.

I have started liking doing the website building stuff. Once you figure out how it works, it’s a nice change of pace from creative writing. One of these days, I will have to finish my Regency Glossary. I still have a few letters of the alphabet to finish off. That thing has been a major project!

Gaelen, I could chat with you all day about the ins and outs of writing; the Regency era and what is your favorite thing about writing historical romance; oh, and what do you think about your loyal fans and did you ever think that readers would become so involved in your characters, series and books when you first started out. (I’ll beg. I have no shame. Feel free to answer any question that strikes your internal fancy. Seriously, I am down on bended knee with hands in prayer position asking the fates to intervene.) But we would be here all day. As a devoted reader; and having finished MY RUTHLESS PRINCE I am itching for another Gaelen Foley book stat, (it’s for my emotional well being and mental stability =)

Christine, you crack me up. I feel more lucky than I can say to have readers who join in on my fictional worlds with me.
